Playful color at Stella McCartney, Leonard and more

It may have been raining in Paris on Monday, but the French capital's catwalks predicted a sunny and colorful forecast for Spring 2016.

Stella McCartney set the tone with a breezy collection of slouchy sportswear separates in bright, primary checks of red, yellow and green. Trapeze dresses that cascaded to the knee were split into two or three different tiers of multicolored , pleated fabric. Stretchy polo neck t-shirts in candy pink and baby blue hues were teamed with athletic skirts that flared away from the body, and eyelet dresses in acidic tangerine, sunflower yellow and cobalt shades added a dash of maturity to the look. The UK designer did throw in some luxurious-looking sleeveless blazers and suit trousers in buttery neutral tones, but on the whole, the collection was a kaleidoscopic tribute to the joys of summer.

A more poetic outlook was on the cards at the Giambattista Valli show, where the Italian designer unveiled a collection replete with soft lilacs, bold floral motifs and garden prints. Amidst the crisp white sundresses and dramatic maxi dresses in billowing greens and golden yellows were flirty separates, sequined jackets that shimmered alluringly and paisley patterns in rusty 70s tones. A semi-sheer eyelet mini dress featuring a soft indigo petal pattern struck a perfect balance between bohemian and chic, and floral corsages adorning sequined mini skirts added a romantic touch to the overall effect. An extra pop of color was provided by the models themselves, some of whom sported neon pink, green and blue eyebrows.

The prints were slightly more chaotic at Sacai, where navy and gold took center stage thanks to a series of metallic skirts, laser-cut embroidered coats and off-shoulder sweaters that managed to look regal and disheveled at the same time. There was lots of pleating, emphasized by drop waists, and dangling ribbons, ticking some of the major Spring / Summer 2016 trend boxes.

The French house of Leonard is known for its joyful use of color, and this season's show was no different. From sheer skirts that acted as canvases for watercolor-like splashes of oranges and purples to comic strip-style motifs and abstract maxidresses in various shades of sandy yellows and ocean blues, the collection was an ode to light, tropical style.
