When it comes to Zendaya’s Paris Fashion Week debut, it’s all about the numbers.
With 72 hours in her calendar, at least ten outfit changes, four hair innovations, two high-wattage front row appearances at Emanuel Ungaro and Vivienne Westwood, and a multitude of run-ins with her Left Bank fan base within the span of 4,320 minutes (if we’re being precise), it can be said without question that the 19-year-old multi-hyphenate celeb has emerged as a dominant breakout style star.
But as she attests, moments after landing back home in Los Angeles after her whirlwind Fashion Week spree, her traffic-stopping ensembles—the Spring 2015 gilded Vivienne Westwood gown with trailing plaid train among them—were hardly deliberate. In fact, she took to Fashion Week rather instinctually. “Honestly, when it comes to my stylist, Law Roach, and me, it’s not very planned,” Zendaya says. “We’re not the kind of people who say, ‘This is what we’re going to wear at this time. This is how we’re going to do our hair!’ A lot of times we’re just on a whim, just doing whatever we want, and that’s when the best things happen. The blue dress I wore to the Buro 24/7 presentation? Law was like, ‘Ooh, let’s put this on!’ and then we threw a jacket on top of it. It was very organic.”
By playing spontaneously with color, texture, silhouette, and yes, hair, the chameleon quite literally looked like a different, stylish version of herself moment to moment—executing a dark, near-cinematic look replete with allover print, matching moss green gloves, and a saucy pageboy at Kenzo, to meticulous cornrows and a glittering flower-embossed Fausto Puglisi minidress and coordinating bomber at Emanuel Ungaro hours later. Her secret to keeping the city on its toes? With an all-knowing laugh, she admits it’s the result of improvised wardrobe changes in the backseats of cars or any available place: “It’s pretty nuts. There is no comfort involved!” Not to mention the hairstyle 180s she regularly executed to pair with her rotating looks. “All I’m going to say is that it’s not always my hair! It’s like taking off a hat . . . let’s just say that!”
And while the fashion world was keeping its eye on the K.C. Undercover star’s next move, her gaze was trained on the runways. “I really loved the fact that all the shows had so much variety,” she says. “There is a lot more emphasis on the show factor in Paris. It’s like a performance almost. There’s a whole shebang!” She was referring, for one, to the theatrics of Westwood’s outré offering this season, where models showcased oversize outerwear with protracted shoulders that soared high. Westwood and Zendaya share a fashion connection after all, with the designer being one of the first to dress her for the red carpet.
No doubt more designers will be clamoring to work with her now, but still the ingenue remains impressed with her fashion peers, like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, whom she ran into outside of the Paris Vogue 95th Anniversary party. Chatting briefly on the red carpet, the three gamely posed for photographs that captured their shared hold on the style world. “Gigi and Kendall were just casually walking out of this party, looking amazing. They are so sweet, and it was nice to see them. I love seeing young ladies doing their thing!” says Zendaya. Clearly, the feeling is mutual.
